SMD resistor code calculator
Resistance from a chip resistor marking in 3 digit, 4 digit or EIA-96 form, with the same value written in the other two formats.
Marking 472
4.7 kΩ
Usually 5% E24 parts.- In ohms
- 4700 Ω
- Preferred series
- E24
- 3 digit code
- 472
- 4 digit code
- 4701
- EIA-96 code
- Not an E96 value
Method
How this is calculated
3 digit: two significant digits, then the number of zeros 472 = 47 × 10² = 4.7 kΩ 4 digit: three significant digits, then the number of zeros 1002 = 100 × 10² = 10 kΩ R is the decimal point 4R7 = 4.7 Ω, 31R6 = 31.6 Ω EIA-96: code 01 to 96 picks the E96 value, letter multiplies 01C = 100 × 100 = 10 kΩ
- Entering a code
- Type the digits without the R and choose where the R sat. 4R7 is digits 47 with the R after the 1st digit.
- Tolerance
- The marking does not state tolerance. In the Yageo scheme 3 digit codes mark 5% E24 parts (in 0603, a bar under the code marks a 1% E24 part), 4 digit codes mark 1% and tighter E24 and E96 parts in 0805 and larger, and EIA-96 codes mark E96 parts of 1% and tighter in 0603.
- EIA-96 letters
- Y × 0.01, X × 0.1, A × 1, B × 10, C × 100, D × 1k, E × 10k, F × 100k (Yageo), and H as an alternative to B (TT Electronics). TT Electronics also uses S for × 0.01 and R for × 0.1, but other published tables swap those two and add Z for × 0.001, so this calculator does not decode R, S or Z: check the maker’s marking document.

FAQ
Questions
10 followed by three zeros: 10,000 Ω, so 10 kΩ. The same value is 1002 in 4 digit form and 01C in EIA-96.
EIA-96 code 01 is 100 and C multiplies by 100, so 10 kΩ. Yageo uses EIA-96 on 1% E96 parts in the 0603 size, where four digits do not fit.
The decimal point. 4R7 is 4.7 Ω, R47 is 0.47 Ω, and 31R6 is 31.6 Ω.
A zero ohm jumper, used to link two pads with a part that a pick and place machine can mount.
